Award Eligibility

Stage One Eligibility

 

The nominated Individual (“nominee”) must:

  • be a person, not an organization

  • be a Managing Director, General Manager, Executive Director, CEO (or equivalent) of an Alberta not-for-profit arts organization with a budget of at least 500k 

  • have been employed full-time or part-time in this executive leadership position by the affiliated arts organization for at least three years

  • be available for an interview by the Rozsa Award Jury (“Jury”)

  • be available to become a member of the Jury and attend the award deliberation sessions in the year following their selection. In addition, the recipient must be willing to address public sessions on key management practices during that year, and announce their selection in their season’s brochure and/or on their website

 

The affiliated Arts Organization (“nominator”) must:

  • be a non-profit with a charitable registration number

  • have been in business for at least three years

  • have a well-defined cycle of activities, the content of which must have a distinct arts focus (as opposed to a cultural celebration)

  • be an individual company, offering presentations of work by artists or creators of art to the public, either to participate in or to experience: that is, have exhibitions, staged performances, workshops or publications of works

  • be deemed to make a meaningful contribution within the arts sector and to the artistic life of their community

  • employ business processes and practices that reflect ethical principles and values

 

Not Eligible:

 

  • Individuals employed by Arts Councils or other such organizations that are directly affiliated with and receive the majority of their funding from any level of government may not be nominated.

  • Individuals employed by post-secondary educational institutions may not be nominated for their work with students and/or faculties that offer Arts performances or exhibitions.

  • Past recipients of the Rozsa Award cannot be nominated again for three years
     

Please note that a potential nominee whose organization does not meet one (1) of the award eligibility criteria (eg. 500k operating budget or have been employed with the organization for three years) may still be eligible. Please contact us prior to nominating. 

 

Nominators

 

  • The first nominator for each Rozsa Award nomination must be the Board Chair of the nominee's' organization. Associated organizations and businesses can prompt the nomination, but the Board Chair must sign and submit it. The second nominator can be from any associated arts organization or board.

  • Family members and employees of nominees are not permitted to nominate candidates for the Award.

  • Nominators cannot have a formal association with the Rozsa Foundation or any of the Rozsa Award partners.

 

Stage Two Award Criteria

 

The nominee will be chosen for outstanding achievement in the Award Criteria as outlined below. All nominations for the Rozsa Award must meet all eight (8) award criteria.

 

1. Encouragement of artistic innovation in the context of achieving positive operating results. 

2. Positive impact upon the financial well-being of the affiliated organization through the development and adoption of a sustainable business model. 

3. Effective contribution to stakeholder engagement; implementation of good governance principles and practices with an appropriate organizational structure (Board, volunteers).

4. Enhancement of the organization’s internal administrative systems and sustainable infrastructure: people, practices, policies, business processes. 

5. Implementation of significant strategic alliances or partnerships that have demonstrably strengthened business results.

6. Demonstration of powerful community engagement that has advanced the organization and its interests.

7. Provision of effective opportunities for staff, volunteer and/or professional artist development. 

8.  Transformational impact on the organization.

 

The Rozsa Award Jury

 

  • The independent Rozsa Award Jury (“Jury”) is composed of Award partners or their designates, two previous Rozsa Award recipients, an educational institute representative, and a representative from the Rozsa Foundation.

  • The Jury reserves the right to contact the nominators and/or nominee for further information. 

  • The Jury will be asked to declare any conflict of interest with a nominee and/or a nominator.

  • The Jury reserves the right to withhold the Rozsa Award in a given year, and all decisions of the Jury will be final.

  • The Jury may not be addressed by the nominees or nominators – either to help their nomination or explain where the nomination could be improved for the following year. 
     

Nomination Process 
 

Stage One: 

 

- The initial stage includes a brief initial nomination submission by the board chair of the nominee's organization, to determine the candidate and organizational eligibility for the Rozsa Award. All nominees will receive acknowledgment of receipt.

Nominate via our online nomination form before May 18th.
 

Stage Two: 

 

- Nominators of eligible candidates will be invited to submit detailed information.

Note: Re-nominations require detailed completion of Stage Two.
 

For Both Stages: 

 

  1. Late submissions will not be considered. 

  2. Please send an email to geraldine@rozsafoundation.org BEFORE the stated deadline to indicate that you will be applying for the Rozsa Award so that a Dropbox folder can be set up for you.  

  3. If you have any existing printed materials (strategic plans, program brochures, etc), please contact us at geraldine@rozsafoundation.org to submit them.
